Day by Day

“What day is it?"
It's today," squeaked Piglet.
My favorite day," said Pooh.”

~A.A. Milne

Looking too far into our past or too far ahead in the midst of our future can be troublesome. It can ruin our mood for that day to dwell on the impossible. Impossible? Yes, impossible. It's impossible to change the past and it's also impossible to fast forward into the future. So, just take a moment to cherish the day at hand. Don't fret over the past and future so much that you forget to live and enjoy the moment God has given you.

And although we tend to forget, we are the one's primarily responsible of just how good of a day we end up having. Sure, there'll be people to sour it up a little or at least try, but then again, we also don't have to give them that power. Here are 7 simple things you can do to make your day all the better

(1.) Wake up earlier

Don't sleep away most of your day. There are so many different things you can go out and do. So many things you can experience. After all "The early bird catches the worm".

(2.) Go for a run

Do various activities to improve your health. Things to get your heart rate up, to improve your health and fitness and you'll find an immediate improvement in your mood and outlook on life for that matter.

(3.) Make a list of all of the people/things you're grateful for in life

Composing lists of people we love or things we're grateful of having been blessed with causes our brains to focus on the more positive aspects of our lives and therefore improves our entire outlook.

(4.) Try something new

Whether you go skydiving or simply decide to go to a store you've never shopped at before. Trying new things is always fun! The perfect way to add a flare of adventure to one's day!

(5.) Spend most of your day surrounded by nature's beauty

Take in that indescribable beauty that nature has to offer! Perhaps do some gardening, yard work, etc.

(6.) Help others

Whether you go out of your way to cheer someone up or buy a meal for a less fortunate being on the streets... helping others always gives a person a sense of worth, a sense of purpose and that makes a body feel enormously good!

(7.) Remind your loved ones just how much you love them

Take the time to write a letter/e-mail to a family member far away just letting them know how much you care, buy a small gift for family close-by, or even just take a moment to tell them how much you care with words.

There are so many ways to improve yourself, your day and your mood, you just have to get out there and try. Don't let the stress of tomorrow or the next day or the day after that bring you down and instead focus all of your energy on simply enjoying your day to the fullest... you can worry about tomorrow when it comes.

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Your Shining Star

Some of the most gifted and talented people I've ever met fail to debut their talents for fear of being ridiculed. It's a tragedy, really it is, the fact that some of the most beautiful masterpieces will never be due to the consuming fear of their yielder. The last post was about reaching for your dream despite the scoffs and rejections from others, this one, however, will focus on our greatest enemy... ourselves. Our own doubts, our own fears. The saying goes "We're all our own worst critics" and how true it is! Like a cement block we tend to stand in the way of our own success. I don't think anyone ever initially feels that they deserve to be renowned for their work. A lot of artists never feel like their work is ever good enough. That little voice of doubt in our minds so easily tends to destroy any pride we may have in our work provoking us to therefore hide it from the eyes of all others. It's a constant battle. It is, however, one that we MUST overcome in order to ever taste the sweetness of triumph in our work. Shun that faint whisper in your head, urging you to give up on your dream. Don't take even a moment to listen. It's like a poison determined to destroy any hope you may have of ever obtaining your moment to shine.

Take Marilyn for instance. She was just an ordinary girl called Norma Jeane. A young girl with a big dream. Despite her undoubted beauty, there were plenty of reasons that she ought give up on her dream. For instance, her vast struggles with the insecurity of never being wanted, of never being good enough alone were  reason enough for her to let it all go. To let her dreams sink into the ocean of despair, a wretched ocean where the dreams of most have so tragically dispersed. She, however, kept on pursuing her modeling career. Shunning any doubt or insecurities she may have bore about herself, focusing on the potential that she DID have in opposition to the qualities that she DIDN'T. Through her determination and perseverance as well as and most especially due to her confidence and self-assurance, she would become one of the most brilliant stars in Hollywood.

I've known so many seemingly "ordinary" people who've surprised me with such astoundingly great talent, yet like a glittering diamond shrouded beneath a rag, they tend to keep these talents, these masterpieces under wraps from the rest of the world.

I think that the world would be a much lovelier place if only we all had a courage to let our inner stars shine. If we could all only learn to display our talents to the world, to never let go of our dreams. I feel that one of the greatest causes of depression is often derived from the loss of one's dream. It is comparable to losing a part of oneself. Maybe that's why so many people suffer from depression. Their zest for life has been lost, dimmed along with their forgotten dreams and aspirations. Dimmed like a once radiant and sparkling city, their brilliance eventually faded to darkness.

So, hold onto your dreams like a prized possession. Keep a white-knuckled grip on them, for so easily can they be lost! Lost to the turbulent storm of life and all it's discouragements. Don't ever stop believing in yourself. You are capable of beautiful things and if you keep them under wraps, the world will never be blessed with having ever known them. After all, you too deserve to shine just as much as anyone else!

Reaching For the Moon

"Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars."
~ Unknown

The world around us can seem so vast! Our hopes and aspirations seemingly as miniscule in comparison to the world as a grain of sand is to the vast cerulean waters of the ocean! Such a discouraging realization can cause anyone to immediately lose grasp of any dreams they may have once had! If there were a graveyard of buried dreams, there'd be at least acres and acres of tombstones. So many tragedies have stood between man and his dream! It's such a pity, the absence of a masterpiece that might have been if only it hadn't been for the mere discouragement and doubt of it's yielder! Oftentimes man's endeavor to keep hold of his dream is lost by the viscous tug of it's monstrous enemies; doubt, fear, and uncertainty. Ah! Yes, uncertainty. A factor responsible for more deaths of a dream than any other. Many a time has it yanked a once beautiful dream into the depths of it's bottomless abyss. It is like a turbulent storm, pulling the vessel of man's dreams, deeper and deeper into the blackening waters of the ocean.

All of this can indeed be daunting. All of the factors, all of the people, pulling you further and further away from your dream. On the other hand though, there are plenty of influences in this world to tell you that you ought not ever stop dreaming. A great means of inspiration for me, would have to be the lives of some of the greatest names in history. Behind their glamour, their fame and their legends, I have, through careful research, learned that there was at one time, just an ordinary person with sometimes even the poorest and at times darkest of pasts. With that knowledge, I have come to realize that anything is possible and that not a single one of my dreams is too farfetched. Here's a little glimpse of these extraordinary stories, of ordinary people who obtained extraordinary levels of fame;

(1.) Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jeane Mortensen)

First known as little Norma Jeane Mortensen, Marilyn would have to undergo a series of turbulent struggles before claiming her legendary spot in both Hollywood and history. During her early childhood, Marilyn would experience, among several other abuses, the excruciating pains of feeling unwanted while drifting from foster home as her mother, Gladys Baker had been far too mentally unstable to care for her.

Norma Jeane at age 5 years old

As the years progressed along with her striking beauty, that is, Marilyn began to realize that she was becoming less and less invisible.

“Suddenly, everything opened up. True, it was mostly boys. But even the girls paid a little attention, because they thought, 'Hmm, she's to be dealt with.' ”

After being discovered by the photographer, David Conover at a munitions factory, Marilyn then began her determined quest for stardom. She had always dreamt of becoming a film-star, and now she was finally pursuing it!

Little did she know, however, that one day, her pursuit would eventually find its' victory and that she would one day place her hands and feet in the cement at Graumaun's Chinese Theatre as the iconic, Marilyn Monroe.

Marilyn would later reflect,

(2.) Audrey Hepburn (Audrey Kathleen Ruston)

Becoming one of the greatest style and beauty icons of all time was beyond anything that Audrey could ever have imagined.

Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Brussels, Belgium on the 4th of May in the year of 1929. At the age of five, her father walked out on both she and her mother, which was, in Audrey's words "The most traumatic event" in her life. After that she would spend most of her time with her mother in England. Audrey would later reflect on being called an "ugly duckling" by her mother and from that time on would never be able to consider herself "beautiful" like the rest of the world would come to know her as.

Focused on ballet as a young girl, Audrey's acting career took flight when she was spotted for the roll of Gigi in the year of 1951 after which she would find her fame in moving pictures when she was then cast in William Wyler's "Roman Holiday"

for which she would later win an oscar.

Along with all of the hearts of American and beyond, that is.

And from then on, she would persist in winning more and more hearts as well as a permanent place in history.

Quite some accomplishments for such an "Ugly Duckling", eh?

(3.) Elvis Presley (Elvis Aaron Presley)

Known forever as "The King of Rock and Roll," Elvis' upbringing was a simple one. That of an "average" as his first grade instructors would deem him, young boy brought up in Tupelo Mississippi. At ten years old, Elvis would land 5th place in a singing contest.

Only to one day be crowned the King of Rock. A long jump from "5th Place" one might add. But not yet, he still had many years of persevering, trudging onward with his dream, fighting past the critical and discouraging words of others. In 1947, at the age of twelve, one of his performances was interrupted by his having developed a horrible case of "stage fright". After continuous attempts in latter years, Elvis' determination to succeed in show business lead him all the way to the endurance of countless other rejections as well as just as many triumphs. Upon auditioning for a local vocal quartet entitled "The Songfellows", Elvis was turned down. "They told me I couldn't sing" was Elvis' words to his father in regards to the refusal. As if that hadn't been disheartening enough, Elvis would face yet another rejection from Eddie Bond, the leader of "Smith's Professional Band, which had an opening for a vocalist. Bond rejected him after his audition and was noted as having advised Elvis to stick with truck driving (he worked for the Crown Electric company as a truck driver) as he would "never make it as a singer". Despite these two disheartening rejections, however, Elvis kept on pursuing his dream until he would one day debut his talents on national television, the reaction from the crowd the perfect justification to all of his struggles.

Following his performances on CBS's Stage Show, Elvis would release his first album which was noted as having been the first rock-n-roll album to top the Billboard chart and the rest is history!

His rejections clouded heavily by his success and lost forever in the past, Elvis' struggle had finally come to an end, his name forever engraved in history.

So, with that said, never stop pursuing your dream! Imagine if Marilyn, Audrey or Elvis let the disparaging remarks or rejections of others bring them down! Why! They would never become the iconic figures they are today if they allowed themselves to give up, let the enemy notion of "your not good enough" stand in their way of fame and success.

Afterall...

Rejection

"Don't be offended by rejection. Instead, let it strengthen your belief that God has better things in store for your dream" ~ John Di Lemme

Rejection can be an enormously positive experience as well as a very damaging one, if you let it. You also have to remember that just one person or one organization's opinion of you doesn't dictate the entirety of who you are.

Just because he rejected you for some reason or the other doesn't mean that everyone else will reject you! A lot of people after breakups or like I said, any other form of rejection start to think this. You weren't the one for him? Oh well! It doesn't mean that the next guy won't adore you! Like there are countless different flavors of tea in the world. One person may despise chamomile while the next may just love it to death! Like tea, there are countless types of beautiful girls in the world. Maybe you just weren't his cup of tea, his type of beautiful. But for goodness sake, it doesn't mean that you're not beautiful! Besides, beauty/looks doesn't always have anything to do with it. There are some guys out there who may think you're one of the loveliest girls they've ever seen or even the nicest for that matter and yet, there's just no chemistry between the two of you. As a matter of fact, I myself can attest to that! I've met guys who were movie star material for sure, and yet... we didn't seem to click. Love is a supernatural thing. It can spark up between the most unexpected people. It's always a surprise just who cupid choses to bring together. There's no rule or rhyme to love. You don't have to look or be a certain way to find it. It just happens!

Another comforting thing to remember in the wake of a breakup is that breakups happen to everyone! You're not the first lovely girl/ handsome young man to be rejected and that in time, you'll find that girl/guy who happens to think that you are "some dish". <3

A Hand to Hold

I can't quite pin it down. The meaning of all of those ruby heart cutouts etched with lace, those cheap letters in bulk with corny sayings depicting a child's affection for the other. It all seems like a bunch of nonsense to me. Mostly a warrant for the painful reminder for all single individuals (like me) that... well, have no one, no one who finds us worthy enough to buy us those heart-shaped boxes of chocolate or those bouquets of roses. All this time, I've been going about it all wrong, you see... I've been looking for someone to drown out my sorrows, to make me feel special and worth their time. When searching for something like that, you begin to create a romance that never was. At the same time, however, I've created some of the most beautiful romances in my mind under such circumstances. They're always very short-lived though. You see, it's always the same story, I start to find myself in some fairytale and then... it's over. He dumps me with some weak excuse.

Maybe that was my problem though, maybe I confused my own self-worth with the approval of others, the need to be accepted... to be loved. I don't know that I ever truly needed any of the guys I've dated or talked to. I'm beginning to see that I was just lonely. The last fling I had enlightened me immensely  I think it was a forced kind of affection on my part. I recall the first few dates, I couldn't quite bring myself to like him that way. As a matter of fact, I was ready to friend zone him and then, strangely enough, I started to believe that I could like him. Eventually convinced myself that I did, perhaps merely in fear of being alone. That's what a lot of us are afraid of... being alone. I find that when I'm alone, not caught up with another person, I am able to improve myself immensely. So, instead of wallowing over the pain of being "alone" on this holiday of love, take a moment to focus on yourself. Learn to love yourself. Buy yourself a Valentine! One doesn't need the approval or adoration of another to feel worthy in life. Most, in fact, crave the ability to improve themselves for their own approval. That's probably one of the biggest weaknesses us girls have. We'll be going along just fine, content with our lives and then some guy comes along and ruins it all, wastes our time and vanishes, just as quickly as he came.

Don't beat yourself up though, it's just a part of our nature. Us girls can be very careless when it comes to love! We tend to give ourselves entirely, only to get nothing but an abrupt goodbye in return. I'm not saying never to allow yourself to fall in love, after all, "It's better to have loved and to have lost then never to have loved at all"! I'm only warning you to keep your guard up, don't fall too hard too fast or for all the wrong reasons or you will find nothing but regret. As a matter of fact, try and stay clear of dating all together, until you're very very ready that is. Work on improving yourself and earning your own self approval instead of searching for someone to make you feel worthwhile. We all tend to do it, search for someone who makes us feel special. After all, It does feel wonderful to belong to someone, there's no denying that! Just be patient about it though. Don't trick yourself into believing that you care about a guy only to feel like you belong to someone, like I did. While waiting for your prince charming, learn to celebrate yourself for you, learn to increase your talents, follow your dreams and better yourself!
